Hybrid Roof Systems

Ease of  Application / Fast Watertight System / Production Friendly

Modified Bitumen systems continue to evolve.  In an effort to remain competitive and with the decline in hot asphalt applied roof systems, Modified Bitumen systems are more effective than ever.  Now that there is increased usage and acceptance of self-adhered roofing why not combine previous practices and today’s technology and create a hybrid system?

The new hybrid…It used to be combining the “old” built up roofing method of mopping two plies of Type IV fiberglass and a Mod Bit, was considered the Cadillac of roof systems. Those systems became too expensive from a labor perspective. Now that roofing projects have become more about “labor bids” how can you remain competitive and efficient?  Reduce crew sizes, install more square footage and get the roof watertight at the same time.

Polyglass has great options for you. Elastoflex SAV, use our self-adhering base sheet over an approved substrate and torching either Polyflex G or Polyfresko G. SAV offers you an easy and production friendly installation. SAV consists of two squares of coverage that your crews can have the roof watertight with less effort. Self-adhered installation practices are still required. And don’t forget to roll the SA to ensure contact with the substrate and adhesion.

Heat welding Polyglass Polyflex G or Polyfresko G to the Elastoflex SAV will give you the redundancy that the BUR systems provided and durability that single ply roofs cannot (remember the weakness is in the name). Heat welding our App membrane to the SAV creates a monolithic compound that will meet the budgetary and warranty needs of nearly any project.

Not an APP for your phone- An APP for your roof!

Some manufactures will lead you to believe that SBS modifieds are the best solution for your low slope roofing projects. Let’s challenge that idea and look at the features of APP membranes.

But first a little history of these different compounds.  SBS mod bit  products were originated in Northern European markets for colder climates where they need elasticity in their membranes to deal with freeze thaw cycles.   APP products were originated in Southern European markets where the climate is more arid and warmer similar to the southern US climates but in particularly Florida.  The harder more resilient compound is more resistant to scuffing from foot traffic than SBS compounds and certainly more resistant to puncturing from that drop of a toolbox by the A/C repairman.  Think about those hot summer afternoons.  The toughness of the APP compound provides an excellent weathering compound for our climate here in Florida

Atactic Polypropylene, but lets keep it simple, APP.  When these modifiers are added to molten asphalt they create a form of “plastic asphalt” that are installed by torching or heat welding.  When APP is is heated the compound melts and begins flowing like candle wax, almost like hot mopping as it flows in front of the roll without the hazard of handling hot asphalt.

Polyglass Polyflex G a 4.5 mil APP membrane and the High Reflectivity sheet that we call Polyfresko offer all these qualities.  The Polyglass APP products can be configured with our base sheets to meet the needs and warranty requirements of your next low slope project.

As you now know from my previous posts, Polyglass is one stop shopping with the ability to supply all your modified needs. From Self Adhered to SBS and APP all the Polyglass products and systems are designed with high standards and quality that you demand. To get this “APP” don’t go to your app store, call Jim Gory at Roof Tech Associates,  407-342-4282,

APP Roof Membranes

  • Full name is Atactic Polypropylene, when these modifiers are added to asphalt they create “plastic asphalt”
  • APP Membranes are installed by heat welding or “torching”
  • When the APP membranes are heated the bitumen begins to flow like candle wax
  • This flow of asphalt reacts like hot mopping and flows smoothly in front of the roll
  • Polyflex G and Polyfresko G cap sheets can be configured with our various base sheets to meet whatever warranty you need for any project

APP-3-500x500-300x300Why These Assets are Essential

  • Being ”plastic” makes this compound harder than the rubber compound of SBS
  • It’s more durable making it less likely to get scuffed up by foot traffic and damage from other workers dropping objects on your roof
  • This toughness translates to providing an excellent weathering compound for the Florida climate

Defend your Roof from the Elements

…and other witch-y challenges. Let’s stick to our themes of asphalt and redundancy, let’s explore SBS modified roof systems. The Styrene Butadiene Styrene is quite a mouthful, but a very reliable roofing system to help defend your roof from the elements and wear and tear that can impact the effectiveness of your roof.

Let’s clarify, what is SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene)?  A rubberized asphalt that is very flexible even in cold weather something that we don’t have to worry about in Florida. The flexibility of the compound also provides elongation properties that allows for expansion and contraction of the roof system. Think of rubber bands being stretched and released.

Polyglass SBS systems can be installed with hot asphalt, cold process, and can be heat welded. Giving you options depending on the project you are going to be working on.  Polyglass SBS systems are generally two or three ply systems depending on the warranty requirements of the project.  Our modified base sheets create the dimensional stability of the system. Elastoflex S6 G or Elastoshield TS cap sheets provide you and your owner the first line of defense from the elements, foot traffic and trades that will cause damage to the system. Elastoflex S6 G and Elastoshield are manufactured with a high performance polyester reinforcement designed for longevity.
All the Polyglass systems are designed with high standards and quality that you demand. If you want to dive deeper into these details, call Jim Gory at Roof Tech Associates,  407-342-4282,

Polyglas Self Adhered Modified Bitumen Roof Systems Dual Compound Technology

By | Florida Roofing, Polyglass | No Comments

Self Adhered Modified Bitumen Roof Systems

Self Adhered roofing has come a long way since the term “peel and stick” was coined. So what’s the difference?

ADESO Technology!

ADESO Technology is what makes  Polyglass Self Adhered Modified Bitumen Roof Systems different and better. Polyglass offers something that no other manufacturer can.  A dual compound membrane. ADESO technology uses a polyester reinforcement to separate the adhesive side of the membrane which is not UV resistant and the APP granulated side that is a more resilient and durable compound.  In the Florida climate, we all know that durability and a better weathering compound is needed, which APP offers.

roof tech associates

The differences don’t stop there.  With our factory applied Fast Lap Polyglass provides you with a granule free end and side lap so you don’t have to spend time embedding granulated laps.  These Fast Laps are protected by release films so the glue strips are not contaminated by debris, maximizing adhesion.

Self Adhered Modified Systems have been around long enough for us to know that they work and are reliable.  SA systems offer the redundancy of plies that we all believe in, and their ease of installation allow for faster and safer installs with smaller crews and less equipment. Smells like money!

adeso logo

Here’s how it works.

The bottom compound is SBS with adhesive, reinforced with a fiberglass mat saturated and coated with a rubberized asphaltic compound with exceptional waterproofing and weatherability properties. The top granulated surface is APP separated by the polyester reinforcement ,saturated and coated with a polymerized asphaltic compound. The top and bottom surfaces of the Polyglass APP Base are finished with poly film and both SBS and APP are proprietary to Polyglass.

Our competitors use a single compound, the problem with that, the adhesives breakdown when faster when exposed to the elements which early degradation of those compounds. The Polyglas Self Adhered Modified Bitumen Roof Systems has dual compound technology which has exceptional waterproofing and weatherability properties. Saves installation time, with the speed and ease of installation you can reduce the crew size.  Quality product, reduces expenses, still have questions ask Jim Gory at Roof Tech Associates,  407-342-4282,

Smells like Money

By | Florida Roofing, Polyglass | No Comments

I remember standing on a top of a structure, watching a roof being installed and saying the smell is horrible, the contractor looked at me and said, “It smells like money”.  Now I understand!

Asphalt has a proven track record and still works. Modified Bitumen membranes have changed the way low slope roofing is done.  Having returned to several projects that were installed over 15 years ago I’ve become increasingly impressed by their performance and durability.

While single-ply roofing has its place and works in certain applications, it is generally used to meet the budget on certain projects. Many of those projects are buildings that are going to be flipped or have owners that don’t have long term plans for the use of the facility.

smells like moneySingle-ply membranes have made many changes to their formulations over the years, seems like with each new launch they are trying to determine how they can improve the weathering package. Ever wonder why they focus on how much compound they have above the scrim? This makes single-ply a questionable choice.

Polyglass offers a full line of Modified Bitumen membranes and systems that will facilitate any project.  The redundancy of Polyglass systems gives you and the owner more protection. You will still be efficient and profitable but you can offer your customer longevity and energy efficiency. You need a product that can stand up to the extreme Florida climate, especially when exposed to excessive heat loads over a prolonged period of time.

What’s the weakness of single-ply roofs?  The answer is in the name.

RTA Rooftops 101 – Silicone

By | Florida Roofing | No Comments
It’s that time again! Session 2 of our Mini Roof-MBA series begins today of Rooftops 101 discussing the important facts about Polyglass and Silicone products.

Session 2 Silicone

Polyglass White Coatings

Polyglass® became a leading manufacturer of modified bitumen roofing membranes in Europe in the 1960s and introduced its products and technology to the United States in 1992. Since then, Polyglass has grown to be a leading innovator in the roofing industry.
In response to the increasing demand for durable white reflective roofs, Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. launched its latest white roof coating system with a line of advanced silicone roof coatings products that include high solids and solvent-based coatings, as well as primers and accessories to complete the system.
Polyglass silicone roof coatings are inorganic, moisture-cured coatings that provide a seamless, flexible and durable protective barrier against weather elements. When you use silicones, future coating opportunities can be diminished because they don’t lose dry millage and they can be tough to recoat because nothing sticks to silicone not even silicone.
Our products are resistant to ponding water but there isn’t a code agency anywhere that allows ponding water to remain on any roof system. We are a ROOFING MANUFACTURE that has to adhere to the regulations of the governing bodies for our industry specifically Florida Building Commission, Miami Dade and the NRCA. We are NOT a paint manufacturer.

The General Details

  • Inorganic compounds lose very little mileage over long periods of time
    • Moisture cured and can take rain shortly after installation making wash off less likely
    • High solids and high solvent based formulas

PolyBrite 90

  • 96% solid volume
  • PB90 needs primer on all substrates because it has such a high solid content that adhesion is slightly less effective than PB 95

PolyBrite 95

  • Only needs primer when going over asphaltic substrates
  • No primer necessary when going over metal or single ply, the solvents “etch” the surfaces of those substrates

PolyBrite 97X – A&B

  • Two part epoxy primer that keeps asphalt substrates from leaching through the top coat of the silicone keeping it from yellowing
  • Helps create better adhesion for the high solids products

PolyBrite FMT

      • PolyBrite FMT Field Mix Thickener is a high-tensile polyethylene fiberf
      • Use in the field by the applicator in order to build up thickness in ponding area and should be used on stress points of the roof as well as reinforcement around penetrations
      • Enhances sag resistance
